I would have to apply black permanent marker to avoid reflection in subjects. I'm sure Nikon will part with a design feature they've used since the F3 Giugiaro anyone? It's not a design feature, but rather a styling accent that serves no function.
Isn't the Nikon badge enough of an identifier? At least that spot could conveniently be covered with tape. Of all the things to worry about this is what you come up with!! Pretty sad. We've become a society where style is more important than function. Darn it! My phone can take snaps and share it without big boys DSLR connectivity issues instantly. These DSLR companies should buy one of those cellphone companies they know implementations better.
For just a little more you can buy a Panasonic G85, better photos, better video, and better tracking and auto focus. The chromatic aberration in those studio photos is terrible, there is a red haze around every black line. My Sony point and shoot performs better. Your definition of "a little" needs more work. Not hardly. Agree with most of that, but the OP has a point about the terrible CA in the studio shots, which is strangely more pronounced than that in the D ones.
I can only think that DPR used a different lens, which kind of undermines the comparison. You trolls, I'm looking at the studio photos comparison How can you argue? The CA is terrible, maybe it's the lens but still I understand in most cases you get a gradual increase in image quality when you increase sensor size but it's not a guarantee. Which do you think has higher quality photos?
Shoot a static subject with the same lens on D and D and I'd expect a very slight advantage to the D, if viewed at the same image size.
As much as I am a fan of the D5xxx family. Though the camera is too small for my hands. I think it should be dropped, bring out the D in keeping with profitability model they need to be doing. Beef up the D to the level of the D now.
Or drop the D Had a D and had to make the choice between that and my D Kept the D The D is more comfortable in the hands, has a larger clearer viewfinder, has a less cluttered feel, and I believe the D is essentially the same body.
I'd keep the D as the basic no-frills model, for which I think there's a market. Dropping the D opens up a gap for mirrorless. However, that's for the future.
As of now, the D is an attractive camera in many ways. The middle model D5nnn is the one that they want you to buy in order to maximise their profits. That is why they give you three choices. What's that class leading difference then? It's certainly not image quality, which still matters to some. For sure, they are nice cameras with much better video the Sony especially. But at twice the price and many fewer lens choices. And neither autofocus is really as strong as the Nikon for following motion, and let's not even talk about the Sony even the Fujifilm confusing menu systems The D still seems an excellent cost effective entry-level vehicle for keen folks coming to a first ILC In terms of sheer bang for your buck - agreed, the D is the better option.
But there is a clear difference in image quality - especially low light IQ - even using the comparison tool here or over at imaging resource - its clear that the A is the king Regarding lenses This notion that Nikon's midrange tier AF is that good is more hype rather than fact For people who buy this class of camera both Sony and Fuji make way more lenses than they will ever buy.
A is a better competitor for the X-T2. They have roughly the same performance and abilities. A is a step up. I think size, fully articulated screen, connectivity and full function touch screen is what makes this camera great. It is my second camera to Nikon D, so I know what I am saying.
IQ not as good as D of course, but anybody would be stupid to expect otherwise, but still very good. Buttons and dials not as good as D, but again who would question that.
Am I able to use in an easy, portable creative way, I definitely do. Can't use if you use your left eye, but that is almost all DSLR's and cameras with a right hand grip and left sited view finder. If Nikon is reorganising, I would do away with all other cameras and keep this one, next D, next D, finally D5 and that's what we all really need from Nikon!! Great camera for size and price. Well done Nikon. I would add one more camera to that line-up, the D, so we have the choice of a slightly more consumer-friendly, general-purpose body in FX too, not just the two specialised pro bodies.
So the kind of "meh" review is misleading. But I recently learned the hard way to take these reviews with a grain of salt. Unfortunately images from the LX are mediocre at best. Really poor high ISO ability for a m43 sensor, DR is terrible, and for landscapes, image quality is utter trash because the lens correct stretches the image resulting in REALLY soft borders and corners. OK, it shoots 4K video, but for still images, it's not even in the same league as the D I was actually shocked the subpar lens performance of the LX and I don't know how DPR missed this aspect of the Panasonic in their review.
I Have exactly the same experience with LX That viewfinder is not "left sited" any more than the D's is. Left-eyed shooters like myself can use the D perfectly well not that I aspire to , but you lose part of the touch screen capability. As the review explains perfectly well. Reviewers seem to be overvalue specs and undervalue IQ.
Meanwhile the D with its rock solid, class leading IQ, gets a "meh" review and condescending little review snippets like "Good for family and casual photographers". No offense to DPR, but it's really kind of laughable. IQ is more than adequate for most uses from all cameras, and that includes smartphones.
Why are smartphones taking over the market? Because they are good enough. We share photos at web resolution for the most part these days, followed by 4x6 prints, and only rarely larger prints. I would compare ultimate IQ to something like top speed in a car. Does anybody buy a car because it has a top speed of mph as compared to mph in a competing model, ignoring all other features of the car? Now, if one of the cars only went 35 mph top speed, that would be another matter.
But if both cars are "good enough," you look to other features. These IQ discussions are divorced from real world considerations sometimes. I "don't care" about IQ in cameras like this because it is awesome. Tell me about features instead. If I were Nikon, I would add a second dial to this and drop the D, maybe add some guide modes for the new photographers. HEWCanon - Agree with most of that, but there definitely needs to be a model in between D and D, as the price differential is too big for many to make the jump.
IMHO Nikon really need to look at their range like this: First a very well specified, fashionable and affordable novice model to get people into the system.
Next a step up prosumer model with significant advantages D Then a pro APS model D They need to drop the D altogether but keep the D as the base FF model. D is getting dated and needs to be replaced with something that competes better against 5DMkiv, Pentax K1 and Sony a99ii.
D5 and D are perfect as they are, and each could probably remain current for another 4 years before needing to be upgraded more MP, better DR, faster burst, better connectivity etc. This camera is a small gem, and doesn't deserve this mediocre review that sounds like somebody wrote on the train on the way back home on a Friday afternoon, before the deadline to submission. I know many people who preferred the D5xxx line to more expensive cameras. I still use the D bas my main camera, but don't shy from using the reliable D, with its connectivity to the web.
Yeah and so does the d, which is the same camera for less money. Ricoh did the same thing with the GRii. Any honest review would make that very clear, instead of dancing around the obvious and trying to make this look like a new camera, with a full review. They added Snapbridge, and tweaked some other things, which is all they needed to do with a camera that was already best in class photographically. Ridgerunner etc - With respect, I don't think you are looking at this the right way.
You should be looking at it from the point of view of a prospective purchaser, who will want to see a full review of all models in their chosen category, not a reference to an old review, with a few notes added.
What metal alloy camera do you own? I see nothing in your gear list. So you have a figured out a way to add Bluetooth support via software without adding Bluetooth wireless? It's called a wifi card! The files this camera is capable of producing deserve a bit of thoughtful editing , otherwise buy one of those little 1in compacts.
It was already built in with wifi. Bluetooth and WiFi are totally different protocols using totally different hardware. Bluetooth basically is a subset of wifi. Besides to do this, it doesn't necessarily need bluetooth it needs wireless because other camera makers have already successfully done this for years without bluetooth. It's Nikon's implementation that needs bluetooth. Saying that Bluetooth can be implemented on wifi because they use the same frequency is like saying that camera should also run Adobe Lightroom because it has a processor inside.
No one else has done that yet. Here is what I said: "Besides to do this, it doesn't necessarily need bluetooth it needs wireless because other camera makers have already successfully done this". Everything I said was completely true. Show me what I said that was false without taking it out of context. I'm sorry but it is. It's so close that it can be done with software. Don't believe me? I was trying to say that the features of this software and this camera do not need Bluetooth.
It can be done with what was already built in to the last version of the camera. And the truth is that Bluetooth invented by Ericsson predates WiFi You are correct that you don't need Bluetooth; but you are wrong that because there is WiFi that Bluetooth is easy to implement. Bluetooth is needed because there is no industry standard low energy WiFi technology for "always on" connection.
Not sure what you are referring to. Most wifi based implementation required to to connect mobile device to camera access point, that in itself means that you can not leave it in always on mode, because your phone loses Internet connectivity. Even those camera which have the ability to connect to external access point, and thus wifi the to your phone, can not be always on for the excessive use of battery.
At this point Bluetooth is the way to go for always connected low battery usage. That is why it is the standard of choice for IoT devices. These series Nikons are fantastic little machines.
I love the pictures they take. I really want to buy this or for its big 3. I owned the d previously which also took fantastic photographs. The only thing that lets the series down is the tiny viewfinder. Its just way too small. You can barely see anything through it. IMO the real plague of the oldies is the lower rez LCD that makes focus checking much, much less accurate than the newer bodies.
I agree totally regarding the tiny viewfinder. That could be the deal breaker for me. No idea what Nikon could do about it, though. Nikon could expand the mirror hump and put in a pentaprism. It would be a little larger, but I think it would be worth it. That, and adding a second dial to it would make me take a hard look at it, though having to dive into menus to change AF modes would probably still be a deal breaker for me.
Good point. Had both a D and a D and the D viewfinder was small compared to the D, so they've obviously shrunk it to minimise the size of the camera. The D one was poky, the D OK. That, and adding a second dial to it would make me take a hard look at it". I feel like it would be easier to just add an articulating screen to the 7xxx line because that's essentially what you'd get with those changes. How could this Ds camera deserve a review while a lot of worthwhile ones have been queuing up for ages The X-T20 is in the process of being reviewed.
I can't promise that its review will be significantly longer than this one but it will be focused on the relevant features of that model. Richard Butler How about a review of the Olympus OM I have been waiting since 72' for a review on this camera.
I am still on the bubble as to purchasing one of these units. It's a whole lot of camera for the money and just what the family camera should be, but needs more for anyone more serious in photography. Let's hope the D is more exciting.
